The year is 1972. On a mild summer’s evening in La Croix Valmer, a small village on the Côte d'Azur, Jakob and his parents paid a visit to their French family friends. Jean and Amandine prepared their own aperitif, by picking fresh fruits from their garden and pressing them into a big carafe.
Their homemade drink was refreshing, but bitter and complex, with no added sugar and no alcohol — so everyone could fill a glass, even the kids.
"Volée is a tribute to Jean and Amandine and to the simple joys of life—enjoyed in the evening and, especially, the morning after."
Now, Jakob and his partner Benjamin have replicated Jean and Amandine’s original creation, using the juice from chardonnay grapes, macerates of grapefruit, mountain peach, elderflower and bitter orange. They mix everything together with a blend of damiana herbal tea and Verjus, the juice of unripe grapes from Rheinhessen.
There’s a touch of organic cane sugar for sweetening, and no chemical stabilizers. That’s why they call it Aperitif Naturel.
It’s an homage to life’s simple pleasures, for living the good life in the evening — and the morning after.
